Friend of TTK Greener Kingston commented on the 5p charge for plastic bags introduced in England on October 5th:

“It’s good to have a charge at last and we hope that it will substantially reduce the litter and other environmental damage caused by disposable bags. But the Government missed an opportunity to introduce a comprehensive system. and has given no good reason for the complex and selective system being rolled out, with exemptions for smaller shops and paper bags and some kinds of produce. Everyone agrees that plastic bags, whatever size of retailer is giving them out, are harmful to the environment and most people are aware that paper bags are wasteful too – so why not charge for them all? Smaller shops want to join in, but they need to be sure that all their competitors will. A comprehensive charge is working well in other parts of the UK, so why not in England?”
